If you want some fairly in-depth stats for your last 100 page hits then Statcounter may be your tool of choice. However, due to a bit of a conflict in terms there has been a boatload of confusion about how to actually set up your statcounter script on your smugmug site. So let's go over it a bit shall we?
First thing's first, you have to actually sign up for Statcounter. See the fine forum at the statcounter site for any help you may need with signing up or using statcounter.

Once you've signed up for statcounter go ahead and login and then click the link up top that says "My Projects".
Once you've gotten to your projects page click on the little wrench to bring up the settings for that project.
We need to get the code that will let Statcounter know that someone has accessed your page. So click on "Install Code."
This is your first page of options. Statcounter is nice because it lets you put your stats on your page wihtout any links or visible counters or anything. Choose what you want on this page and click next.
Your site should not be using frames
see here for reasons why. So make sure to select "No, my website does not use frames." Do not use the HTML-Only Counter option. You do not need it and it has fewer features.
If you know what you are doing you can opt to select the other options on this page. Be advised that there are plenty of things that do not validate on Smugmug pages. One more thing probably won't kill you.
Make sure to choose "No, I want the default install guide" on this page and click next.
This is the code that you will use to install statcounter on to your page. Highlight all of the text in that box (make sure you get all of it!) and copy it to the clipboard (ctrl-c in windows).
Note: I have blacked out my information so nobody else trys to use it. You will notice that your code does not have 3 redacted parts.
Now, go to your smugmug site (making sure that you are logged in) and click on the control panel button.
Scroll down until you see "Organize & Customize" and then click on "Customize."
Now scroll down until you see the "footer" box. Paste your code into that box (ctrl-v for windows).
Finally click on "save customization" and you are all set!
